Suspicious package causes evacuation at Oshawa grocery store

A fake explosive device caused an Oshawa grocery store to be evacuated on Nov. 16. Now, Durham Regional Police investigators are trying to identify the person who left the object at the store.  At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 16, the DRPS was called to the Real Canadian Superstore on Gibb Street in Oshawa. A suspicious package had been left near the entrance of the store and it looked like an explosive device. Construction workers nearby attended the area and moved the device away from the front door. The Tactical Support Unit attended the scene and officers from Central East Division evacuated the store and parking lot as a precaution. Experts from the Explosives Disposal Unit examined the object and determined it was not an explosive device. Police say the investigation is continuing and store video is being reviewed. Investigators want to determine who was responsible for creating and placing the device at the location. Anyone with new information about this ongoing investigation is asked to contact D/Cst. Hartry of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2732.
