The province’s police watchdog is investigating a collision involving the DRPS that left one person with serious injuries.

According to a release from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), two people were sent to hospital after an incident that occurred early in the morning on Feb. 1.

At around 12:15 a.m. the Durham Regional Police stopped a vehicle in the area of Townline Road and Nash Road. After a brief conversation with police, the car sped off.

However, it was only moments later that the car lost control, flipped and struck a pole on Townline Road, north of Taunton Road. The driver of the vehicle was able to get out and take off on foot before being apprehended with the help of the police K9 unit.

Both the 25-year-old driver and the 26-year-old passenger were transported to hospital, but only the passenger’s injuries were deemed serious. According to a release from the DRPS, the injuries were non-life threatening.

The SIU has assigned two forensic investigators to the incident.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about the investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. They are also urging anyone who may have any video evidence of the incident to upload the video via their website at www.siu.on.ca

The DRPS are not legally able to comment on the case.
