Run for Terry Fox

It’s been 38 years since Terry Fox brought the entire nation together as he attempted to run across Canada in support of cancer research and awareness.

Although Fox was unable to finish his journey and passed away of cancer in 1981, the spirit of the cause continues on through the Terry Fox Run. The event has become internationally-recognized, with $750 million for cancer research in Canada alone.
More than 10,000 related events will take place this September in Canada, including runs in 215 locations across Ontario. There are runs in 31 other countries across five continents worldwide.

Oshawa’s event takes place on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Storie Park, 101 Mill Street. Participants can chose from one, two, five, eight or 10 kilometre routes.

The event opens up at 8 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 9 a.m., and runs till 1 p.m. The Oshawa run is open to those in wheelchairs, rollerblades and bicycles.

Terry’s brother Fred made a visit to Durham Region this past weekend, meeting with volunteers involved with the Oshawa and Whitby events.

“Fred’s visit was a wonderful opportunity for committee members and volunteers to hear first-hand just how important the work they do in their communities is,” says Lee-Anna Poelman, chair of the Oshawa Terry Fox Run organizing committee.
