Ridgebacks fall to 1-1 with loss to Voyageurs
Coming off a huge 6-0 win on Saturday, a game that saw hat tricks from Cassandra Sribny and Shynice Williams, the UOIT women’s soccer team were unable to find the back of the net at home against Laurentian in their 2-0 loss on Aug. 30.
Voyageur forward Sam Selkirk opened the scoring in the 25th minute, finishing the pass from Amanda Kwan.
Two quality chances were turned aside in the first half by Laurentian keeper Richele Greenwood, with multiple shots flying just over the crossbar. By halftime, the Ridgebacks were unable to find the back of the net and continued to trail 1-0.
Greenwood was kept busy in the second half as UOIT increased the pressure, putting six shots on goal, but in the 84th minute the Voyageurs’ Sarah Sanford scored on one of her teams’ two shots on goal in the second half.
The Ridgebacks were also in trouble as starters Sara Voisin and Mikaela Tierney left the game in the 78th minute after colliding in the UOIT 18-yard box, just prior to the Voyageurs goal.
UOIT is now 1-1-0 on the season and will have the next two weeks off from regular season play as their next conference game isn’t until Sept. 12 in Ottawa against Carleton.
However, on Sept. 9 they will have their annual friendly against the Durham Lords for the Campus Cup, with the women’s match scheduled for 7 p.m.
