Report: Getting more expensive to put food on the table

It is getting more expensive for a family in Durham Region to maintain a basic healthy diet, according to a new study from the Region of Durham’s health department.

Detailed in The Price of Eating Well in Durham Region 2016, the cost of a basic healthy diet for a standard family of four in Durham Region is $193 every week, or $837 per month, marking a 12-per-cent increase over the grocery bill that the same family would have seen five years ago.

The report also notes that 10 per cent of households in the region, or approximately 50,000 people, are food insecure, with adults in this category being “more vulnerable to chronic physical and mental illnesses, with the risk increasing with the severity of food insecurity.”
