Panel discussion to launch Epilepsy Awareness Month
In Ontario there are approximately 95,000 people living with epilepsy, and there are 6,000 new cases every year
An estimated 65 million people worldwide live with epilepsy, more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease combined.
In Ontario, approximately 95,000 people live with epilepsy with 6,000 new cases diagnosed every year, meaning that at any given time there are tens of thousands of people who have been diagnosed with epilepsy, but do not have, or have not yet achieved seizure control.
On March 5, Epilepsy Durham Region launches Epilepsy Awareness Month and hosts its annual volunteer recognition celebration alongside their newly launched panel discussion.
“It’s a month of open discussion about epilepsy and ending stigma. Our panel discussion is a perfect way to launch our Epilepsy Awareness Month and Purple Day celebrations,” says Epilepsy Durham Region CEO Dianne McKenzie.
The panel discussion will be held at the Whitby Public Library Main Branch at 405 Dundas Street West from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
“Exchanging ideas, giving ambassadors and audience members the chance to discuss their challenges in their words is vital to reducing isolation,” McKenzie adds. “The goal of the panel discussion is to establish a network of support beyond the evening event.”
