Oshawa area tops new housing price index

Once again, the Oshawa area saw some of the highest new home price increases in the country.

According to new numbers from Statistics Canada, the average price of a new home in the Oshawa census metropolitan area, which also includes Whitby and Clarington, were up 1.1 per cent in March from the month before, making it the highest increase in the country. Close behind was Guelph and its 0.9 per cent.

The price hike in the Oshawa area is attributed to builders citing higher construction costs and improving market conditions.

Nationwide, the new housing price index went up 0.2 per cent over the same time period, and is up 3.3 per cent compared to a year prior. The largest increase in that time was seen in Toronto, with new home prices going up 8.4 per cent.
