Number of EI recipients down

The number of people receiving unemployment benefits in the Oshawa area has seen a downturn.

According to new numbers from Statistics Canada, 6,640 people in the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – were receiving income benefits in May, down from 7,440 the month before.

This, however, marks a slight increase over the same time last year, with 6,440 people claiming benefits in May 2015.

Across the country, the number of people claiming benefits was up slightly from the month before, up 0.9 per cent to 544,900 in May, and up 2.4 per cent from May 2015.

Alberta was the province was the largest increase in people claiming benefits, with numbers going up 12.1 per cent from the month before, while Prince Edward Island’s 4.4 per cent decrease was the largest in Canada.
