The newest head of Durham regional council will be coming from within.

With the recent passing of Roger Anderson, the office of regional chair and CEO was declared vacant at the April 4 committee of the whole meeting.

After declaring the vacancy, council selected to fill the position with an existing member of council.

Nominations will be taken at this week’s regular council meeting.

Council also had the option of reviewing external applications for the position or calling a by-election, which would have resulted in costs for both the region and local municipalities.

Moving forward, the council member chosen to replace Anderson will be required to vacate their local seat. They will also assume Anderson’s duties on numerous committees, including the region’s Non-Profit Housing Corporation, the Roundtable on Climate Change, and as chair of the Durham Police Services Board. However, this latter position could be taken on either by his replacement or another member of regional council.

Anderson was first appointed to the position in 1997.

He later became the region’s first publicly elected chair in 2014, winning 47 per cent of the vote.

As of press time, no council members had publicly voiced their interest in the position.
