New awards for cultural contributions

The City of Oshawa is inviting nominations for its inaugural Oshawa Culture Counts Awards. The new awards program will celebrate and honour the creative and cultural achievements of the community.

Artists can be nominated or apply for three categories:

Oshawa Culture Counts Professional Artist Award, which will recognize an established artist of any medium has demonstrated creativity, originality, professional maturity and artistic leadership in the community;

– Oshawa Culture Counts Emerging Artist Award, which will recognize an artist in the early stages of their career in any arts discipline who is both skilled and determined to advance their artistic capabilities. This individual understands the value of their own gift within the community, and leverages these skills to inspire and enrich the lives of fellow citizens; and is between the ages of 12 and 30 years, or has begunĀ  their artistic practice within the past five years; and,

– Innovation and Creation Champion Award, which will honour individuals, collectives and/or organizations in the creative and cultural industries who have created or enhanced an event, product, program or partnership in the past year. The award recognizes work that is unique, transformative and positive in its impact on arts, culture and heritage in Oshawa.

Applications are due by Friday, Jan. 19, 2018 and will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the Cultural Leadership Council. The winner for each category will receive a $200 honourarium and be awarded at the Feb. 19, 2018 council meeting as well as featured in a special program at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in March.
