Muslim child hit with racist threats
Police were called to Woodcrest Public School on Thursday, March 2, after a masked man hurled anti-Muslim threats and slurs at an 11-year-old student.
Durham police are seeking to identify a suspect after a child had death threats hurled at them on the school yard.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, officers were called to Woodcrest Public School. According to police, a suspect approached the school yard and shouted anti-Muslim slurs and threats at the student, who is 11 years old.
In a statement emailed to The Oshawa Express, officials with the Durham District School Board say that while such an incident is an isolated one, it is taking it very seriously.
“Upon learning of the student being threatened by a community member standing outside the school fencing, we contacted the Durham Regional Police Service. Police arrived quickly thereafter to begin their investigation. At the Durham District School Board, we believe in and embrace equity, diversity, and inclusive practices,” the statement reads.
“We do not tolerate or accept this type of behaviour toward our students. The safety of our students remains our top priority and while this incident is certainly an isolated one that could have occurred at any school in the GTA, we are taking extra precautions to ensure that our students are not subjected to threats of this nature.”
The student reported this to school officials, and police have launched an investigation into this incident.
The suspect is described as a male standing six feet tall and approximately 30 to 40 years old. He was last seen wearing a black sweater, black pants and wearing a ski mask.
