Deluxshan Pathmanathan is heading home and he couldn’t be more happy about how it’s happening.
The assistant coach and recruitment coordinator for the Durham College men’s basketball team has been welcomed to Sri Lanka’s coaching staff for their U18 national team that will be participating in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October.
The games will take place October 6-18, the first time the Summer Youth Olympic Games will be held outside of Asia. The first two were held in Singapore in 2010 and in Nanjing in 2014.
There will be approximately 4,000 athletes competing across 35 sports at the Games.
Entering his fourth season with the Lords, Pathmanathan is looking forward to the opportunity of taking basketball knowledge from his experiences in North America back to his native country.
Pathmanthan will travel to Sri Lanka’s capital city of Colombo for two weeks prior to the Youth Olympics. During that time he hopes that his experience as a college and provincial team coach will allow him to take the North American style of play to the team, while developing their skills, strategies and tactics.
“I’m looking forward to bringing the international experience back to Durham and assisting the team in reaching our goal of an OCAA gold medal.”
