It was a night of celebration as more than 400 people gathered at the Sikorski Hall on Stevenson Road North to recognize the Oshawa Senior Citizen Centre’s 50th anniversary.

Oshawa MP Colin Carrie, MPP Jennifer French, and Mayor John Henry were among those on hand to bring greetings at the May 3 event.

“When you’re standing up looking out at this crowd it is absolutely amazing, and that would’ve never happened if there wasn’t a group of dedicated volunteers and staff that put tonight on,” Henry said.

OSCC executive director Sandra Black said the response to the gala speaks volumes about the organization’s role in the community.

“We all know what a special place the OSCC is and what an importance it has made in the lives of older adults in the City of Oshawa,” Black remarked.

“Staff that love what they do, who have a passion for serving others, and feel it’s a privilege to do and not a job,” she continued. “It’s the more than 500 volunteers who have dedicated countless hours to ensure that we are able to offer so many programs and services, and it’s the members who believe the centres are truly their home away from home.”

Carrie stated with OSCC set to open a fifth branch at Sikorski Hall in the future that it’s time to celebrate the past and present.

“We’ve had some great news with the expansion and I’m sure we’ll be having another great 50 years.”
