Feed the Need ramping up fundraising efforts

With Thanksgiving this past weekend, the countdown to the holiday season has begun.

While it is a joyous time where many can reflect on their own good fortune, for numerous individuals and families it is a time when hunger and poverty is a daily concern.

Feed the Need in Durham is inviting residents and businesses across Durham to ‘give thanks and give back’ not for just special occasions,  but for every day.

The group offers support for those wishing to host a food or fund drive and welcomes all food donations at its warehouse facility, located at 371 Marwood Drive in Oshawa.

Donations can be dropped off Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well cash or cheques.

Monetary donations can be made online at feedtheneedindurham.ca.

Robyn McKinnon, outreach coordinator for Feed the Need in Durham, says items at the top of the list at this time of year include canned meats, vegetables and fruits, peanut butter and dry pasta.

She points out that while this is the time of year many people increase their charitable activity, the need is greater as well.

“As fast as the food comes in, it’s going out pretty quickly,” McKinnon says. “It’s a never-ending cycle.”
