Eyes off your phone and on the road
Dear Editor,
One day last week, as I was inside one of Oshawa’s fast food joints, I witnessed one of Oshawa’s finest doing a fine job of handing out tickets to drivers next door pulling in to Tim Hortons and texting at the same time.
It pleased me to see the hammer drop on to these fools that don’t take driving seriously!
I only hope that this becomes a common sight in and around Oshawa, as these lawbreakers are killing and maiming more than drunk drivers according to the OPP, from what I understand.
This week, all we hear about is the terrible crime in the GTA of driving in the HOV lanes, and all the police manpower involved in that effort to keep the lanes open for fat cats to drive easily from one Pan Am venue to another, probably at taxpayers’ expense. The perpetrators even lose demerit points for this gross indiscretion!
It took years to finally for the provincial government to enable the police to have the same treatment for drivers texting while driving, even though many people had died or were maimed for life because of this idiotic practice!
Their priorities baffle me to say the least.
At any rate, my hat is off to the constable doing the ticketing last week! Please make this a habit, as I see this disgusting behaviour in that area often!
It warmed the cockles of my heart to see some real justice for a change.
I only hope the violators were receiving the maximum penalty allowed by the newly-enacted distracted driving law in effect recently, including demerit points, not some warning as they have had enough time to realize that this practice is a proven killer, and they don’t deserve any sympathy.
