Lamplight Tour sheds light on Victorian Christmas

By Chris Jones/The Oshawa Express

The Oshawa Museum’s annual Lamplight Tour is coming back again this year, and is bringing something new.

The Lamplight Tour, which takes place on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m., will have a Museum Mini-Market this year that will allow those attending to take home souvenirs. The market will include products from Jenny’s Goods, Rock Jewelry Designs, and Krafts by Kirby.

Beginning in 1993, the Tour is meant to give patrons an idea of what a Victorian style home would have looked like at Christmas. They do this by decorating the Oshawa Museum in a manner that would have been seen in the Victorian era, even going so far as to only have oil lamps.

Those on the tour will be able to visit Henry House, Robinson House and Guy House. At Henry House, visitors will be able to see how the Henry family would have decorated their home, including clothing, food, and music.

At Robinson House, attendees will be able to visit its two latest exhibits, Community Health in the 20th Century: An Oshawa Perspective, and A Carrying Place: Oshawa’s Indigenous Story.

At Guy House, Galiah Gears – an award-winning artist – will be putting a steampunk twist on Victorian Christmas to entertain visitors.

Those attending will also be able to have a meet and greet with Father Christmas himself, Santa Claus, while drinking some cider or hot chocolate.

Over the last nine years, the Lamplight Tour has raised over $7,500 in sponsorships, with almost 4,000 families, Oshawa Historical Society members, members of special interest groups, guests of sponsors, and Museum patrons attending the Tour since 1993.

Tickets are $5.00, and can be purchased at eventbrite.ca or at any of the Museum homes on Dec. 1.
