EI rates up in Oshawa area
More people were claiming employment benefits from the government in August than the month before – however, this may be mostly caused by legislative changes to the federal program that happened over the summer.
According to Statistics Canada, 8,790 people in the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – were claiming benefits from the government in August, up from 7,070 the month before, marking an increase of nearly 25 per cent.
In a posting on the Statistics Canada website, it is noted that starting in July, regions across the country posted notable benefit increases as legislative changes allowed people to stay on the program for longer.
