EI numbers down

Oshawa area numbers below those seen in 2015

Fewer people were claiming benefits from the government in September than the month before.

According to new numbers from Statistics Canada, there were 6,230 people in the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Clarington and Whitby – in September, down from the 8,790 seen in August.

This also marks a decrease from the same time in 2015, when there were 6,480 people claiming benefits.

Numbers were down across the country as well, with 686,140 people claiming benefits from the feds, compared to 841,150 in August. However, this is an increase over September 2015, when there were 647,200 people claiming benefits.
