Durham athletes see Olympic action

A contingent of Durham athletes are competing in this year’s Summer Olympics in Brazil, and the first two to see the spotlight were Courtice’s Alyssa Chapman and Ajax’s Nichelle Prince, both with the women’s soccer team.

The Canadian squad got the tournament off to a great start, defeating the higher ranked Australian club 2-0, including a record setting goal 21 seconds into the game by Janine Beckie.

Chapman got her chance on the field during the second half of the game, while Prince would have to wait until the team’s 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe to get onto the pitch.

Most recently, the club ran up against Germany in the quarter finals on Aug. 9. The results of that game were unavailable prior to The Oshawa Express’ press deadline.
