Dispose of propane tanks safely

propane_tanksWith summer weather comes barbecues, and with many barbecues comes propane.

As a result, the waste management division of the region’s works department is reminding residents how to dispose of used propane tanks, as well as helium tanks and other pressurized cylinders.

Unwanted tanks can be dropped off at one of the region’s waste management facilities for a safe disposal, free of charge. Locations can be found at durham.ca/wmf.

Residents are reminded that these tanks are considered hazardous or special waste, and thus will not be accepted during roadside waste collections – so no putting that old propane tank in the blue bin!

Alternatively, residents can get rid of their unwanted tanks using Stewardship Ontario’s Orange Drop program, which provides locations to drop off hazardous waste, such as used cylinders. Locations can be found at makethedrop.ca.
