Cops seize sawed-off shotgun

A group of bystanders are being credited with disarming a male after he is alleged to have pointed a sawed-off shotgun.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, officers were called to the area of Etna Avenue and Drew Street after receiving a call about an armed person. According to police, the male suspect, who was in the company of another male, was walking on Drew Street when he yelled at people in the area to stop staring at him. It is at this time that police say the suspect pulled out a sawed-off shotgun and pointed it at a bystander at close range.

The bystander grabbed the gun and, with the help of four others, was able to disarm the suspect and hold him until police arrived.

An unloaded sawed-off shotgun was located at the scene by police.

A 20-year-old male of Wilson Road North has been charged with 12 offences, including pointing a firearm, uttering threats, possession of a prohibited weapon and failure to comply with a recognizance in connection with this incident.

Police are also seeking to identify the male that was with the suspect. He was last seen walking away before the physical confrontation began.
